چکیده

zoologists, especially in the context of vertebrate evolution. Embryological information on these animals is now also needed in the field of evolutionary developmentaT biology {Evo-Devo), as it is expected to provide hints about the origin of vertebrate traits, whether the hagfishes are an inor outgroup of vertebrates,This review summarizes the importance of hagtish embryology from a phylogenetic perspective, and the history of attempts to obtain hagfish eggs and embryos. Clearly, the main difficutty associated with these animahs is their deep-sea habitat. To circumvent this problem, this review also discusses the tuture prospects tor obtaining embryotogicat material, both from the wild and in the laboratory.

Cyclostome embryology and early evolutionary history of vertebrates.

Modern agnathans include only two groups, the lampreys and the hagfish, that collectively comprise the group Cyclostomata. Although accumulating molecular data support the cyclostomes as a monophyletic group, there remain some unsettled questions regarding the evolutionary relationships of these animals in that they differ greatly in anatomical and developmental patterns and in their life histo...

Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Endocrine System in the Hagfish

The hypothalamic-pituitary system is considered to be a seminal event that emerged prior to or during the differentiation of the ancestral agnathans (jawless vertebrates). Hagfishes as one of the only two extant members of the class of agnathans are considered the most primitive vertebrates known, living or extinct. Accordingly, studies on their reproduction are important for understanding the ...

Gonadotropin releasing hormone in the primitive vertebrate family Myxinidae: reproductive neuroanatomy and evolutionary aspects.

The family Myxinidae embraces all hagfish species, and occupies an evolutionary niche intermediate between ancestral vertebrates and the gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates). Gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) modulates neuroendocrine activity in vertebrates and works in the context of the hypothalamic-pituitary (H-P) axis. The appearance of this neuroendocrine axis marks one of the most crucial...

Analysis of fluid dynamics in perfused glomeruli of the hagfish eptatretus stouti (Lockington)

The capillary tuft of glomeruli of the hagfish mesonephros contains both 'low'-pressure and 'high'-pressure glomerular vessels (LPGVs and HPGVs). The existence of the HPGV raised the possibility that pressure filtration could occur in the hagfish kidney when the blood pressure was sufficiently high. Therefore, measurements of glomerular capillary pressure were made in HPGVs and LPGVs whilst sin...

Evolution of the insulin gene superfamily. Sequence of a preproinsulin-like growth factor cDNA from the Atlantic hagfish.

Complementary DNAs encoding a preproinsulin-like growth factor (prepro-IGF) have been cloned from a primitive vertebrate species, the Atlantic hagfish, by using a DNA amplification strategy based on the polymerase chain reaction. A composite sequence containing a 414-nucleotide open reading frame encoding 138 amino acids and 164 nucleotides in the 3'-untranslated region was obtained. The deduce...
